What is a Routing Number?
A routing number, or an ABA Routing Transit Number is a unique nine-digit code that acts as an “address” for a bank. Routing numbers are used to allow the transfer of money between financial institutions to be accurate.
“For example, the first four digits are determined by the location of the bank and the Federal Reserve used to process customer’s payments. The “25” in the routing number corresponds to the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond, Virginia. The next four digits are unique to the financial institution, and the 9th digit is the checksum (number used to verify data).” (Source)
This is why it’s important you enter your routing number correctly when engaging in wire transfers or direct deposits. If the routing number is wrong your money can end up going to the wrong place.
Large banks often have multiple routing numbers depending on the location of the physical bank in a given city or state.
